Analyzing Oral Histories

 

I.          Be faithful to your subject - capture his or her perspective

 

II.         However, also be critical and analytical in discussing the life narrative by contextualizing your subject's life and perspective

 

1.         How does her/his background shape their outlook? 

 

2.         How did the historical period shape their experiences and beliefs?

 

3.         How does the present context shape their memories?

 

4.         Are there contradictions/points of conflict in the interview?  Why?

 

5.         Are there other sources that contradict or support your subject?  Explain why differences of perspective exist.

 

6.         What is the broader historical, cultural or social significance of this person's life? 

 

7.                  How does it relate to the topics that we have been discussing in our class?
