Korean Immigration During the First Wave

 

I.          Important Dates

 

1902-1905                               7,000 recruited to work in sugar plantations of Hawaii

                                                < 100 students and merchants to the Mainland

                                               

1905                                        Korea becomes a protectorate of Japan following the Russo-Japanese War;  Japan cuts off Korean immigration to Hawaii

 

                                                approx. 1,000 workers remigrated from Hawaii to the Mainland

 

1910                                        Korea becomes a colony of Japan;  only exiles and "picture brides" migrate

 

1910-1924                               > 1,000 "picture brides" arrive

            Small numbers and short period of migration - no Koreatowns

 

            Christianity - social organization and gender relations

 

            Korean Nationalism and Japanese Imperialism
