Issue Investigation

Look back over your reflection journals so far this quarter, as well as the list summarizing your Reflection Journal 4's, and identify an issue or public policy that you see as relevant to your service at your service site.You might choose to investigate a public policy that affects your community partners site directly; for instance, how laws and procedures determining how families of low income get food assistance has direct affects on work that Children's Hunger Alliance does. Your topic may be one that indirectly affects your site; for instance, attitudes toward immigrants from other countries can affect the access they have to learning English or to training, the mission of the Columbus Literacy Council. Or you may look at an issue that affects the actual doing of service, a question about how volunteers enter communities or about how people from outside a community can help establish a reciprocal relationship with community partners, a question that affects how many of the organizations you all are working with this quarter recruit and train volunteers.

Whatever issue or public policy you choose, for this essay, I’d like you to describe and explore it, using both your own experience and information from outside sources (which may include written material, information from the Internet, interviews with people). Who would be a good audience for this piece of writing? What would you want to tell that audience? What form would be most appropriate? We'll generate specific draft criteria in class.

The first draft of this essay is due Tuesday, February 12. Your second draft is due Tuesday, February 26. Final drafts are due by 5pm on Thursday, March 6 in my office, University Hall 114F. To receive full credit for WP #2, you must turn in all three drafts on time and participate in responding to drafts of your classmates.
