Japanese Phonology

1. Overview

This is an graduate-level seminar on both synchronic and diachronic aspects of Japanese phonology.

2. Syllabus

The course will be structured to accommodate the specific research interests of the students enrolled.  Two main topics will be explored:  synchronic phonology of modern standard Japanese (Tsujimura); dialect comparisons, internal reconstruction, and analysis of Old Japanese texts (Martin).  To tie these together, we will discuss work on the history and development of pitch accent in Japanese dialects.
