English 883C: Electronic Literacy | Department of English | The Ohio State University

Course Schedule

The course is constructed around three nodes in a network of related topics:

At the beginning of each node, I list suggested materials by source (reserve, photocopy, web). Entries for individual class meetings first list required readings from the required course texts and then, in some instances, other suggested readings, again by source.

Please keep in mind that this schedule will continue evolve as we work together in the course: watch this page for listings of additional readings, pointers to online resources, and projects authored by seminar participants.

Also, please note that we need to find alternative dates for the classes scheduled on April 13, April 25, and May 25 because of conflicts with the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the Corbett Lecture, and the Rhetoric Society of America Conference, respectively.

Topics and Readings

March 28

Introduction: Before class, please read the brief article I have placed in your mailboxes, "Response: Mapping the Emergent Structures of Hypertext" and visit my graphic representation of "The Problem Space of Literacy Studies." These two resources suggest some general ways to think about literacy in general and electronic literacy in particular. To balance those abstract constructions, we will also consider some specific literate artifacts and practices that exemplify issues related to the evolution and diversity of the artifacts, interfaces, institutions, and cultural practics of literacy. If you have a chance before class, browse the following sites:
