About the Editors

Samuel Sullivan Cox's "Journal of a Tour to Europe" (1851)

This edition is still being developed and proofed. Please do not cite this preview until this notice is removed.
The editors welcome suggestions and corrections (see link above).

Restoration of the Journal. In order to scan the pages of Cox's journal, which was in very delicate condition, the volume had to be disbound and the outer folds of the gatherings repaired. Once the scans were completed, the volume was resewn and rebound. Harry Campbell, Book and Paper Conservator for The Ohio State University Libraries, graciously agreed to be interviewed about the project and do much of the restoration on camera so that this edition could document his work.

This section of the edition is still in the early stages of development. The video clips below consist of unedited footage, but they provide a close-up view of the work of a master craftsman as he talks us through a restoration project. Note: Captions are under development. Meanwhile, transcripts for much of the video are available from the principal editor, H. Lewis Ulman
