DANIEL SAREFIELD'S PERSONAL PAGE

I'm Daniel Sarefield. I've put this page here to provide you with my CV and teaching portfolio, which you can find by following the links marked on this page.

To tell you just a bit about me, I hold a Ph.D. in Greek and Roman history from the Ohio State University, where I have taught for a number of years. Although I teach introductory courses covering the long span of Western Civilization and world history as well as advanced courses in Roman history and Late Antiquity, my research specialties are the ancient world and, in particular, the subjects of religion and violence. My dissertation, "Burning Knowledge: Studies of Bookburning in Ancient Rome," is a series of case studies that analyze the development of book burning as a form of religious violence in the Roman world. Some of my research have already begun to appear in print, such as "Bookburning in the Christian Roman Empire: Transforming a Pagan Rite of Purification," in Violence in Late Antiquity: Perceptions and Practices, Harold A. Drake, ed. (Ashgate: Aldershot, Hampshire, England, 2006), 287-96. (Please see my CV for other recent and forthcoming publications.) I am also interested in the convergence of religion and violence in other historical periods and places, and I have recently completed a chapter on contemporary political and religious violence for the Western civilization reader Exploring the European Past: Texts and Images, published by Thompson Custom Publishing.
