Although the Soviet dictator Stalin often showed himself hostile to the West, he nevertheless looked to America and other Western countries for ideas to transform Russian society. The tower depicted here is one of many built under the supervision of Lavrenty Beria in Moscow in the 1950's, buildings that have
more in common with the architecture of Chicago than with the
churches of Moscow.
