| Overlooking the Sound of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, Duart Castle has long been associated with the Clan Maclean, one of the powerful kinship networks in the Western Highlands of Scotland. Two other clans, the MacDonalds and the Campbells, also contended for power, with the
Campbells becoming especially succesful largely because of their
alliances with English speakers in the Lowlands of Scotland and also
with the English government.
