Fifteen primary and secondary teachers of Spanish will converge on OSU's Columbus campus this June for a week of linguistic and cultural immersion as they learn more about Ohio's second language and the world of those who speak it. Participants will be chosen from a range of school and district types, from a variety of backgrounds, and from all around the state. Together they will explore the many Hispanic communities of Ohio, meeting and working with native Spanish speakers from a wide range of lifestyles. Topical discussions, kicked off by presentations by Guest Scholars and local humanists and facilitated by an OSU Faculty Team, will challenge participants academically and give them a framework for learning in the off-campus neighborhoods. Five Master Teachers will work in small groups with the participants to help make the course content and format relevant and practical for the K-12 curriculum. The teacher-participants will each ultimately reach hundreds of others by replicating aspects of the program in their own home schools and communities and by disseminating successful lesson plans of their own creation to the rest of Ohio's Spanish teachers.
