Recreation & Free Time
Most
teachers spend their free time in the evenings
either exercising, seeking out delicious chinese
cuisine, and shopping. Wuhan, a city of 8 million
prople, has much to offer everyone. There are
three distinct districts in Wuhan, one of which
is Hankou, a short ferry ride across the Yangtze,
where teacher have found hours of entertainment
shopping. Wuchang, known as the cultural & arts
center, is where teachers find the best food,
including Hu Bu Xiang, or "breakfast street."
Many teachers buy bicycles as well, and there
is a relaxing and peaceful route directly from
campus around East Lake. East Lake National Park
is also quite accessible.
Another
very important part of the program is interaction
with students outside the classroom, in the evenings
and on the weekends. Students are the best tour
guides and can help teachers find any food, locate
any product, or have any adventure. This sort
of interaction, which the program refers to as
"added value" really promotes genuine relationships
and fosters understanding between Americans and
Chinese. Even though it isn't required for teachers
to spend time with students outside class, every
teacher has always found that the students are
eager and willing to interact with them and by
the end of the summer it is in fact very hard
to say goodbye to these wonderful people.
