"I heard that it's impossible for Americans to learn Chinese."
--Student at a study abroad fair
While it may take Americans more work to learn Chinese than Western European languages, it is far from impossible. With
145 undergraduate Chinese majors graduated since 1973 (10 in 2004
alone), the Chinese program in the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures has shown that you can learn Chinese... and it all starts here, with
first and second level Chinese.
Chinese can be studied in three ways at Ohio State:
中 Daily, in the classroom
(the subject of this website)
中 1-5 times per week in
Individualized Instruction
中 3 quarters' material condensed into one summer quarter through
Special Programs in East Asian Concentrations
(SPEAC)
This website describes classroom Chinese study at the Ohio State. For information on the other two programs, please click on the appropriate links above.
