Northwest Maui Africa and Norway

My wife and I enjoy travelling.  Our family lived in Tokyo for a semester in 1973, where I served as a Fulbright Professor at Waseda University and the University of Tokyo.  We also lived in Hamburg, Germany in 1982-83, where I served as a Fulbright Guest Professor.  Teaching abroad, and living and travelling abroad, has never made me an expert in any foreign land, but the experiences have very much affected my understanding of American society and history for the better.

Recent trips included

In 1995 we drove 8,000 miles in the Pacific Northwest, including the Canadian Rockies and Vancouver.
A 10 day cruise in March 1997 that included the Panama Canal
Two seeks in Britain in June 1997, after which I delivered a paper at the annual meeting of the Business History Conference.  We met abroad for the first time, in Glasgow, Scotland.
Nine days in Chile in November 1997.  Rita gave two papers at an International Family Nursing Conference in Valdivia and I played tourist.
Spring break 1997 in Hawaii, on the island of Kauai.   Frequent Flyer miles are sure wonderful!  And so was the place we stayed, Hibiscus Hollow.
A safari in Kenya and Tanzania in the summer of 1998.
On our return we spent a week in Europe.  It made changing planes in Amsterdam more fun!
Our Christmas present to each other in 1998 was an off-season trip to Italy.  We visited Rome and Florence, enjoying the sights and the museums without crowds.
In 1999, Rita taught in Eskilstuna, Sweden for a few weeks.  Then I joined her in Stockholm, took the boat to Finland, went to a nursing conference in Tampere (I played tourist and, of course, rented a bicycle for a day!).  Then it was on to St. Petersburg, Helsinki, and a week of driving around the fjords in Norway.
In 2000 we flew to Bergen, Norway to take the coastal steamer. (Here are some snapshots of scenery.)  We were on it for twelve days, going around the North Cape to Kirkenes on the Russian border, and back to Bergen.  Then it was on to Oslo by train (the hotel there loaned us bicycles for a day, which made it easy to get around), before going back to Eskilstuna where Rita had another conference.  I played tourist, and enjoyed a day alone in Stockholm.

In the future we hope to make other trips.

We hope to make a long driving trip in the Southwest during cooler months of the year.

In the meantime I need to keep working so we can save money so we can afford to travel when I retire!

I will place a few more pictures in my "photo album" page.
