Alfred Thayer Mahan's The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 is available on the web.  His thesis is almost entirely contained in the first 89 pages.  This was the bible for all naval officers who wanted a battle-oriented fleet--and therefore your bible, too.  (Others were impressed as well:  Kaiser Wilhelm II ordered a copy placed aboard every German warship.)

Emblematic of the warship preferred by Mahan was the battleship USS Kearsage, shown here in 1899.
