The OSU Mafia

The "OSU Mafia" is a name jokingly (and sometimes not so jokingly) given to the myriad graduates of the Ohio State military history program who lurk--I mean work--in a number of the country's universities and think tanks. Mark Grimsley--himself a member--has begun keeping a list of OSU goodfellas on the web.


Thomas F. Arnold (Ph.D., 1992), works for the Alliance for Online Learning (we don't have a marketing name yet) which is a joint project of Yale, Oxford, and Stanford Universities.

Chris Cain (Ph.D., 2000), Colonel (select) USAF, is editor of the Aerospace Power Journal at the Air Force's Center for Aerospace Doctrine and Research Education (CADRE) at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

John Farquhar (Ph.D., 1991) is Deputy Head of the Department of History, U.S. Air Force Academy.

William B. Feis (Ph.D., 1996) teaches American history and military history at Buena Vista University.

A. Harding Ganz (Ph.D., 1972) teaches modern European history and military history at The Ohio State University, Newark campus.

Allison B. Gilmore (Ph.D., 1991) teaches American military history, U.S. history, and East Asian history at The Ohio State University, Lima campus.

Thomas J. Goss (Ph.D., 2002) is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army. He is currently posted to the "Strategic Issues Team" on the International Military Staff at NATO Headquarters, Brussels . 

Bryon E. Greenwald (Ph.D., 2003) is a Colonel in the U.S. Army and Assistant J-3, U.S. Joint Readiness Command, Norfolk, Virginia.

Kelly Jordan (Ph.D., 1999) commands the Army ROTC detachment at the University of Notre Dame.

Alexander N. Lassner (Ph.D., 2002) is Assistant  Professor at the Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama.

Brian Linn (Ph.D., 1985) is Professor of History and Director of the Program in Security Studies and Military History at Texas A & M University.

Jerry Martin (Ph.D., 1988) is Command Historian, Strategic Command, Offut Air Force Base, Nebraska.

Pete Maslowski (Ph.D., 1972) is Professor of History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Kelly McFall (Ph.D., 1998) teaches European history at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas.

Geoffrey Megargee (Ph.D., 1998) works at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

Malcolm "Kip" Muir, Jr. (Ph.D., 1976) is Director and Chair of the John A. Adams '71 Center in Military History and Strategic Analysis at the Virginia Military Institute.

Richard Muller (Ph.D., 1990) is a professor and Chair of the Department of Strategy at the Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Alabama.

William Odom (Ph.D., 1995) is a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army and now a civilian Strategic Planner at the U.S. Joint Readiness Command, Norfolk, Virginia. He is also owner and master instructor of Norfolk Karate Academy, Norfolk, Virginia.

Matthew M. Oyos (Ph.D., 1995) teaches American history and military history at Radford University.

Mark Parillo (Ph.D., 1987) is professor of history and director of the military studies program at Kansas State University.

Mark Pitcavage (Ph.D., 1995) is an Independent Consultant for the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He maintains a web site dealing with Far Right Extremism in the United States.

Jeffrey J. Roberts (Ph.D., 1990) is profesor of history at Tennessee Technological University, where he teaches European, Russian and Middle Eastern history as well as European military history.

Clifford J. Rogers (Ph.D., 1994) is a professor of military history at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York.

James T. Seidule (Ph.D., 1997) is an assistant professor of military history at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York.

John Stapleton (Ph.D., 2003) is a professor of military history at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York.  (Starting to notice a theme?)

Stephen K. Stein (Ph.D., 1999) is an instructor at the the University of Memphis and an adjunct professor at the U.S. Naval War College.

Caroline Ziemke (Ph.D., 1989) works as an analyst at the Institute for Defense Analyses, Alexandria, Va.

Richard Zuczek (Ph.D, 1995) is a professor at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn.
