Globalization Emblematic of globalization, and the main lightning rod for opponents, is the World Trade Organization, created in 1995 as the successor to GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade). The benign rationale for the WTO is that it facilitates trade everywhere and thereby benefits all. The more sinister explanation is that it is a weapon used by multinational corporations to cram unfair agreements down the throats of less developed nations.
