On 19 May 2001, Harvey Graff was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy
honoris causa by the University of Linkoping in Sweden. With 8
others from around the world, he was recognized in a formal ceremony for his
contributions to scholarship, with particular emphasis on his studies of the
history of literacy and growing up. The public presentation noted the
interdisciplinary, critical, and contemporary aspects of his pioneering
historical research and the wide range of its influence. Graff received a laurel
wreath, an inscribed gold ring, a diploma, and a doctor's hat, in a celebration
that is without parallel in his experience.
