Introduction to English 880C, The Seminar in Composition

Thursday, 31 March 2005

I would like for you to imagine a narrative, a story, about learning or teaching in which you are/were a key player or observer.  (This does not have to be “school” learning or teaching.)  I’m going to use some reductive language to describe what I’m looking for.  I would like this to be nonfiction.  In other words, I would like your narrative to “capture the actual,” as Robert Coles would say. This will be an exercise in creative nonfiction, for certain, but I want to foreground the “nonfiction” part of the assignment.

In class on Thursday, I am going to ask you to compose this narrative.  I will give you more instructions then.  For now, your job is to just recall the story.  If you’d like to do any “work” to help you recall this narrative, feel free.  Bring anything you’d like to class with you.
