This course provides an introduction to the field of Latino/a Studies. Students will explore the cultures, experiences, histories, languages and arts of Latino/a peoples in the United States; examine the creation of Latino/a Studies as a field; and survey some of the key issues and debates within Latino/a Studies. Surveying the historical and current efforts of Latino/as in the legal, religious, political, literary and artistic arenas will allow students to better understand and appreciate the visions of this American community. We will read and respond to materials from a variety of disciplines, therefore, students will gain an introduction to the variety of disciplinary discourses and methods within the academy and to the interdisciplinary methodologies required in Latino/a Studies. This course also has a service-learning component: students will participate in hands-on work with the Latino/a community in Columbus. Through tutoring and teaching with the Columbus Literacy Council, students will deepen their knowledge of the local Latino/a experience.
