French Grammar Review

French 401
Dr. Sharon Collingwood

This course is a rapid revision of French grammar, with particular emphasis on idioms and colloquial expressions. Much emphasis is put on interactive work in class; we aim for an informal working atmosphere in which students are encouraged to help each other to learn from their own mistakes and from the mistakes of others.

The class is taught primarily in French, and students are expected to converse in French during class time. If you feel unable to discuss a problem in French, you are welcome to discuss it with me in English after class or during my office hours.

Regular attendance is very important in a language class. Only legitimate absences (illness, family emergency, school-sponsored activity, etc.) supported by written verification, will be accepted. Work-related responsibilities and vacation reservations are not classed as legitimate reasons for absence.

A large French dictionary, like the Harper-Collins Robert Unabridged French Dictionary. If you are planning to specialize in French, I highly recommend the "Petit Robert" [Dictionnaire alphabétique et analogique de la langue française, eds. A. Rey & J. Rey-Debove].
