On-Line Dissertation Abstracts

Marjorie K.M. Chan
The Ohio State University

There are several major websites with on-line dissertation abstracts. One is the on-line, searchable, UMI ProQuest Digital Dissertations website. However, to access that website, a websurfer needs to be affiliated with an institution that subscribes to that service:

  1. UMI ProQuest Digital Dissertations
    URL: http://wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations/
(search, order copies, view full text)

UMI's website has more than 1.4 million entries, with citations dating from 1861, and those published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts, written by the author. (Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. Of the 1.4 million titles listed, UMI offers over a million in full text. For these titles, the database citation includes UMI's order number.)

A second website is that provided by the Linguist List:

  2. Linguist List Dissertation Abstracts
    URL: http://linguistlist.org/diss/list.html

Anyone who wants to add their linguistic dissertation abstract on-line can do so at no personal cost at the Linguist List's website. One simply fills out their abstract submittal form at:

    http://linguistlist.org/dissop.html

Their on-line database is searchable by keywords. Most of the entries are recently completed, 1990's dissertations.

A third website, which is also freely accessible, is OhioLINK's online, searchable dissertation abstracts database (and is part of OhioLINK: http://www.ohiolink.edu/):

  3. INNOPAC Web Dissertation Abstracts OPAC menu
    URL: http://olc7.ohiolink.edu:1090/search/

One searches their on-line database by subject, author, title, institution, advisor, ISBN, and UMI control number.

In addition to the above on-line websites for dissertation abstracts, associations and individual linguistics departments have also taken advantage of the World Wide Web to make their graduate students' dissertations available for on-line purchase. Such websites, which also provide useful on-line abstracts for perusal, are maintained either directly by the respective department, or by graduate students organizations. The following are several that have been located. We would be delighted to add to either the above list of websites, or to the list below of individual departments with online dissertations.
