GOALS:              a) Survey of the literature on tone relevant to Chinese
                        linguistics -- divided into several topic areas
                       - Readings generally restricted to Mandarin Chinese
                         with additional information from instructor which may
                          include other dialects and other tone languages for
                          comparative purposes or to broaden scope.
                    b) Hope to also develop students' ability to present,
                        discuss and analyze critically.


REQUIREMENTS:       Auditors: class participation in discussions.  Presentation
                               of one of the readings desirable.
                    3 Units:  Presentation of one article from the readings.
                                Term paper
                    5 Units:  Presentation of two articles from the readings.
                                Term paper


DEADLINES:          October  2:  Selection of paper from the readings.
                    October 23:  One-page abstract of paper topic
                    December 4:  Papers due for 3-unit students
                    December 7:  Papers due for 5-unit students
                    

GRADES:             Attendance, class participation, presentations:   15%
                    Term paper:                                       85%

OUTLINE OF          Weeks 1 & 2:  Background and introductory materials
COURSE:                           (2nd week: Phonetics Lab tour of hardware
                                   and software relevant to tonal studies;
                                   tapes for listening and transcription.)

                    Weeks 3 - 9:  Presentation of materials by students and
                                   instructor.

                    Week 10:      Class presentations of term paper topics
