TEXTBOOKS
This course makes full use of internet resources. Readings will be introduced during the quarter where relevant and will be placed in 208 Cunz Hall (and on Reserve in Main Library as needed).

Top COURSE DESCRIPTION
Chinese 694 (Group Studies) is for investigation of problems in Chinese language, literature, and linguistics. The topic for Spring Quarter 2000 is "Chinese Computing." As this is the first time that this topic is taught in DEALL, this quarter's offering will necessarily be experimental and exploratory in nature. If the course proves useful to our students, a formal, 600-level course on "Chinese Computing" will be proposed.

Top COURSE OJECTIVES
This course investigates issues pertaining to Chinese computing. Students will learn about various changes in computer technology in recent years that affect Chinese computing. The course aims to provide students with hands-on experience in exploring software relevant for study and research in Chinese, including fonts and codes, input methods, etc. for various programs. The course provides a forum for students to discuss with classmates the results of their testing and comparison of software for Chinese language study and/or teaching and research, and what internet resources are available for their research. Students will have opportunities to use software for speech analysis, creation of a home page and other web pages and web-accessible files that make use of multimedia and non-multimedia software and hardware.

Top COURSE CONTENT
The course will be conducted through lectures, guest lectures, as well as presentations of course assignments and projects. Students are encouraged to propose guest lecturers whose expertise would aid them in their course assignments and project preparation.

Top STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Students are expected to attend class, design a personal home page as part of their course work, and be prepared to discuss their course assignments and projects with classmates. Students are expected to conduct their discussions in class as well as on a mailing list set up for this course. Chinese fonts, software, etc., will be installed in the Computing Lab in 148 Cunz Hall for students without a personal computer. (The class may meet occasionally in 148 Cunz Hall during the quarter if access to multiple computers would be useful. The fonts and software are also useful for students to help each other at school or for working on group assignments.) Submission of projects and assignments (testing and evaluation of software, etc.) should aim to be accessible online for classroom presentation.

Top GRADING
Grades are based on student attendance and participation, five take-home assignments, and one project. Assignments and projects are presented in class for discussion. More details will be given in class.
