Classical Persuasion 3 -- Controlling Idea and ReasonsAfter you have developed a controlling idea (or controlling purpose or thesis), you need to come up with reasons that your readers should support your thesis. The ABGW calls these reasons "because clauses." There is no set number; it depends upon your purpose and the scope of the paper. Example 1 Thesis: The SAT should be modified Reason(s): because it gives an unfair advantage to males. Example 2 Thesis: The SAT should not be modified Reasons: because there is no alternative, because it gives a fair chance to everyone, because preparation courses are available. [This example is probably too broad in scope for a 4-6 page essay.] Example 3 Thesis: Grade inflation is the biggest problem facing college students today Reasons: because it reduces the value of a college degree, because it gives students a false idea of their "true" performance. Writing Activity: Individually, develop reasons or because clauses to back up your thesis. Then, in groups, discuss whether the scope of your argument is appropriate and whether your reasons make sense given your thesis. Finally, email me your thesis and reasons through WebCT. |
