Persuasive Essay and Evaluation
Essay
- What is the author's controlling purpose? If you don't know,
how could the author make it more clear?
- Looking back at the places where you were confused, write
a sentence or two for each instance describing why you were confused
and suggesting what the author might do to clarify the passage.
Be sure to quote the passage in your response to this question.
- Does the author effectively establish authority? If not,
suggest a place where the author could establish authority and
how.
- Does the author provide efficient evidence to support the
thesis? If so, what is the most compelling evidence and why?
If not, where is more evidence needed?
- What is the author's ethos? Is it effective?
- Is the author's logic sound? Does the author commit any fallacies?
If so, which ones?
- What one thing in the paper should the author definitely
keep and why? What one thing in the paper can the author do without
and why?
Narrative
- Point out two places where the author uses "show"
words effectively, and two places where "telling" could
be replaced with "showing." Be sure to quote the passages
in your response to this question.
- Who are the characters? Are they well-developed? What more
would you like to know about them?
- What is the setting? What more would you like to know about
it?
- What is the theme? Has the author effectively expressed the
theme through descriptions, details, and dialogue?
- What one thing in the paper should the author definitely
keep and why? What one thing in the paper can the author do without
and why?
