English 405, Special Topics in Professional Communication: Marketing

MW 5:30-7:30
5 credit hours

English 405 can be used to fulfill one of two requirements for English majors: a course in an area of English other than literature or an elective at the 400-level or above.

Fulfills an elective requirement for the Professional Writing Minor [**see note]

In this class, you will work on a "real world" project with a client to market a product. In this case, the client will be the History Department and the "product" is the history major. The primary project of the course is to develop a brochure that the History Department can use to publicize its major. Not only will you learn how to create a great brochure, but you will also learn how to write some other types of professional documents, such as a memo and press release. You will also gain valuable computer skills (manipulating digital images, creating your own graphics, printed page layout) and learn the basic strategies of designing effective marketing campaigns.

** Ohio State Marion will begin offering the professional writing minor over the next few years, if its core courses make sufficient enrollments. Electives that count toward the minor include (but are not limited to) English 271, 276, 304, 405, 467, 567, 570, 572, 574; History 598.01. Only two electives are needed for the minor. The minor's core courses, Hums Col 450 and 589 (an internship experience), will be offered during the 2008-2009 school year.
