Course Description
This course explores the theme of literacy and digital media. Through reading a variety of texts composed in different media and through composing texts using a variety of digital media, we will explore the following questions: What is literacy? How are groups’ definitions of literacy related to their values and identities? How is literacy acquired? How do digital media and new ways of composing new kinds of texts challenge traditional ideas about literacy, learning, and writing? This class will challenge you to compose texts differently than you have in the past—you will both “read” and produce texts that combine words, images, and sounds. In doing this, you will come to have a better understanding of your own composing processes (both of traditional papers and non-traditional compositions) and the multiple literacies that have affected and will continue to influence your learning and working.
