FYWP's Place in OSU's Writing CurriculumAlmost all first-year students at Ohio State are required to take a course taught in the First-Year Writing Program, and most students take English 110. After completing the first-year writing requirement, students take intermediate composition, 367, which is offered in the Department of English and in several other departments. Many undergraduates take a third writing course in their major, often as juniors. In the Department of English, that course is English 398: Critical Writing. |

| Students come
to the First-Year Writing Program in several ways, depending on their placement,
which is determined primarily by their writing abilities. Most students
place directly into a course offered by the First-Year Writing Program.
Some students needing preparatory course work begin in the Writing Workshop
where they enroll in English 109.01 and 109.02, before enrolling in English
110 or 110L. Many international students and students for whom English is
a second language, before enrolling in English 110 or 110L take English
106, and/or 108.01?courses are offered in the ESL Composition Program. Depending
on their Advanced Placement test scores, some students may receive examination
credit for English 110 or H110 (Honors 110) and be advised to enroll in
H167.
Many varieties of 110 and 110L are offered, and all are offered through the First-Year Writing Program, but one. The exception is 110W, a course that combines two hours of independent study with 110 and is taught in the Writing Workshop to students needing preparatory work in smaller classes. |
