Japanese Painting
Yamada Doan
Patriarch Rinzai (c: Linji) planting a pine tree
ink and color on paper, mid-16th century
Tokyo University of Arts
.
| Note the attributes of this hanging scroll of Rinzai, also known as
Linji. The patriarch, setting off to plant a pine tree, wears a garment
which has two holes in it and has an otherworldly expression on his face.
The painting shows Rinzai as a Buddhist unconcerned about his outward appearance
and the concerns of this world. The artist has placed his own identifying
rectangular seal in the lower left. Above, an unidentified person
has added five lines of a passage from the collected sayings of Linji Yixuan,
and has left a circular seal. The addition of calligraphy and the
placement of seals is an artistic skill which adds beauty to the painting.
