Performing Arts
Rising jazz
piano star Vijay Iyer
and his quartet make their local debut in an intimate cabaret-style show in
the Black Box on Mershon Stage. His wide range of influences (he's worked with
everyone from tabla players to hip-hop artists such as Mike Ladd) and his
compelling live performances have won him raves from fans and critics alike.
Yesterday's "Columbus Dispatch" featured an interview with Iyer in which
he discusses the political consciousness that infuses his compositions, saying
"the people who make culture are removed from the burning issues affecting
the world." To read the rest of the interview, click here

AN EVENING OF AFRO-PERUVIAN JAZZ MUSIC
The sounds of black coastal Peru are the foundations
for Gabriel's music. The powerful rhythmic elements
found in Afro-Peruvian music energize jazz in a
compelling way. The "fusion" of these two art forms
occurs most naturally resulting in music unlike any
other jazz inflicted sound in the world. The 6 piece
ensemble from Peru includes trumpet, saxophone,
guitar, bass, percussion & zapateo dancing and drums.

This Sunday November 6th --The Gongman, Michael Bettine of
Wisconsin, as our Icebox guest
artist. This should be something quite sensational- he will perform a
solo concert on 50 gongs!!! This is no random bashing or crashing however as he
has some pretty sophisticated compositions and arrangements which take
advantage of the tunings of different gongs. For more on Michael, please go
to: www.homepage.mac.com/mbettine
The show is at 3 pm and is an all-ages event.
Adult admission is $5. - Please feel "free" to bring your kids
along-- after all, they will be free at
the door. It is certainly a unique experience for a child to hear the
stirring and exotic sounds of gongs, 50 of them at that. The venue is: Acme Art Company, 1230 Courtland Ave., in the Short North
(Courtland is on the
NE corner of Fifth Ave. and No. High St.-- behind the old Shell
Station.)

Columbus Jazz Arts Group with Branford Marsalis Tickets Available Soon!
($5) Saxophonist
Branford Marsalis hardly needs an introduction: from his association with
brother Wynton, to leading the band on "The Tonight Show," Marsalis
is a magical jazz name in America who continues to chart new musical ground.
Southern Theatre 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM (Website: Columbus Jazz Arts Group)
This
should be a sea-change season for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
Pending personnel decisions will shape the future of the orchestra. A music
director should be named some time this fall, effectively Marsalis hits town in
October for a long weekend of big-time shows with the CJO at the Southern
Theatre, and jazz violinist Regina Carter, along with the return of
musician/arranger/conductor John Clayton, is featured on In a Mellow Tone
(January).
Albert-George
Schram will lead a Pops Series that will celebrate Broadway (Broadway Divas,
January), film (Gotta Dance, February) and Celtic music (A Celtic Celebration,
March), and welcome American treasure Judy Collins (October). Schram also leads
the three-part Concerts for CSO's own search for a potential superhero music
director will be concluded by then as well.
Call 228-8600.
Opera Columbus opens the 2005-06
season in its new home at Mershon Auditorium (OSU CAMPUS). The
housewarming begins in massive fashion Sept. 30 with Verdi's epic Aida.
The company of 200 will feature opera stars such as Frances Ginsberg and
Randolph Locke, as well as dancers from Columbus Dance Theatre, the Raise Mass
Choir and a host of extras. Add in animals from the Columbus Zoo and it should
be a memorable production.
The
rest of the season includes what general director Philip Dobard called "a
new tradition," the December opera being a family-friendly one -- in this
case, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretl, featuring a set designed by
Maurice Sendak; and two classics, The Threepenny Opera (featuring Chuck
Gillespie in his second of two local performances, see below) in January and Madama
Butterfly in March. Call 469-8100.
BalletMet
Columbus The question from Lewis Carroll is apropos, as
BalletMet plans the world premiere of Gerard Charles' interpretation of Alice
in Wonderland in February. Other premieres include a selection in the Dance
Metro performance (October) and Jazz Moves. George Balanchine's Stars and
Stripes (March) includes choreography to the music of John Philip Sousa.
Call 229-4848.
Byron
Stripling and company serve up a season of CJO tributes: Boone will pay tribute
to her late mother-in-law, Rosemary Clooney, in September; Charlie
"Bird" Parker and "Dizzy" Gillespie get the CJO treatment
in February; reminisce on the Cotton Club in March; give the ladies of jazz
their turn with Ella, Billie and Sarah in May; and memorialize Ray Charles in
June.
And
don't forget Jazz Moves Columbus with BalletMet in April. Call 294-5200.
