A CONCERT exploring African roots and American influences of the banjo, presented by Bob Carlin and Cheick Hamala Djabate at 8:00 PM at the Hale Black Culture Center, 153 W. 12th Ave. The Concert is preceded by a LECT-DEM at 4:30 in Sullivant Hall, Music and Dance library, 1813 N. High St. in the basement seminar room.
MARCH 6 Songs of the American Temperance Movement The University Chorus at the Newark Campus of Ohio State will present "Songs of the American Temperance Movement" on Monday, March 6 at 8 pm in Founders Hall Auditorium.

It's a big week of local debuts at the Wexner Center: a rising jazz star, a major new film from South Korea, and a Japanese dance theater ensemble.

Performing Arts

Rising jazz piano star Vijay Iyer and his quartet make their local debut in an intimate cabaret-style show in the Black Box on Mershon Stage. His wide range of influences (he's worked with everyone from tabla players to hip-hop artists such as Mike Ladd) and his compelling live performances have won him raves from fans and critics alike. Yesterday's "Columbus Dispatch" featured an interview with Iyer in which he discusses the political consciousness that infuses his compositions, saying "the people who make culture are removed from the burning issues affecting the world." Japanese dance theater ensemble Pappa Tarahumara brings its sweeping spectacle and atmospheric imagery to Mershon Auditorium with a one-night-only performance of "Ship in a View." Come early to the Saturday night performance of "Ship in View" for a preperformance talk with John Giffin, a professor in Ohio State's Department of Dance and former dancer with Pina Bausch.

The sounds of black coastal Peru are the foundations
for Gabriel's music. The powerful rhythmic elements
found in Afro-Peruvian music energize jazz in a
compelling way. The "fusion" of these two art forms
occurs most naturally resulting in music unlike any
other jazz inflicted sound in the world. The 6 piece
ensemble from Peru includes trumpet, saxophone,
guitar, bass, percussion & zapateo dancing and drums.
