What is the color or charm of your sounds? How does
music encode, shape or reveal cultural and individual identities? Does it have
a social message, or can you read one into or with it? In this course we will
explore musical creations by selective African-American and African composers,
with emphasis on the cultural and social currents and individual biographies
that inform these works. A highlight of the course will be presence of the
African-American composer of international renown Olly Wilson, who will be the
guest composer in residence in January at the School of Music’s Contemporary
Music Festival with the theme, A Celebration of African-American Music. Main
class activities include reading and listening (understanding) from and with
scores, charts, critical texts, plain old vinyls, recent recordings and live
concerts. Ability to read music is an advantage, but not required. Open to
seniors and graduate students from all disciplines.
