The stream in Connacht shown at left is one of very many in Ireland
that people have revered, in some cases as far back as the pre-Christian
Celtic era.
The conversion of the Irish to Christianity by no means ended the
sacred status of streams and lakes: in many cases, they become associated
with saints. Near the stream depicted is a little shrine dedicated to Saint
Patrick (below).
