Finland and Sweden

While the ancestors of the modern Swedes, Danes, and Norwegians traveled especially far westward, to Iceland, Greenland, and America, they also extended themselves eastward. Turku, the oldest city in Finland, was founded by Swedes, and the Swedish language is still widely heard there along with Finnish.

The Vikings also left their mark on Eastern Europe. The origins of the word Russia are controversial, but one account attributes it to the Finnish word for a Swede, Ruotsi. By this account the Swedish overlords in the city of Novgorod were identified with their Russian-speaking subjects.
