Building Traditions in the Delware Valley

When colonial settlers constructed houses in their new surroundings, they often had in mind the building traditions of their early homes. One vestige of these traditions can be seen in parts of the Delaware Valley north of Philadephia. The resemblances of many houses there to the stone buildings of Yorkshire is no coincidence. Many of the settlers came from the North of England and in fact gave names to their new towns and villages that recalled places they knew in the old country.
