The palace complex of the Alhambra in Granada dates back to Muslim times, and it contains some of the most celebrated Islamic art to be found anywhere in the world; among its most famous attractions are the Court of the Myrtles and the Court of the Lions, the latter famous for its intricate stucco patterns. In the Muslim world, the Alhambra is sometimes remembered with melancholy as the final capital of the Moors of Andalusia before their expulsion from Spain in 1492. By the year 1800 the Alhambra had suffered from years of neglect, but concerned intellectuals including the American author Washington Irving campaigned to save it. The Alhambra is now a World Heritage site and one of Spain's most visited attractions.
