Belfast Murals:
Introduction

In recent decades Belfast has become known for the popular art found in many working-class neighborhoods in both Catholic and Protestant areas, as in the case of a mural with William of Orange. Like most other Belfast murals, this one has politcal overtones. Viewed in one light, the murals show visual flair and a sense of community pride. Viewed in another light, many of the paintings garble history, literature, archeology, and linguistics, and at their worst, they glorify ethnic hatred and terrorism. The look at the murals to be found here is not intended to further any sectarian position but rather to promote understanding of a longstanding tragic historical conflict.
