May Day in Finland

As in other countries in Europe, the first of May is a major holiday.

The picture at left shows several Finns wearing their high school graduation caps--crowns worn on May Days long after graduation! In Finland, as anywhere else, a holiday makes people hungry. Broileria, a common Finnish word for chicken, comes from English broiler, which appears in the sign at left, along with a Finnish word for sausage (makkaraa).
