Alert Bay
British Columbia

Alert Bay is a small port facing Vancouver Island. Once an important center for fishing in the Pacific Northwest, the town attracted many hoping to make their living from the sea. Overfishing and other policies harmful to the environment have taken a heavy toll, and the town has had to look to other sources of income including tourism, which it is now promoting with the help of groups such as the U'Mista Cultural Center. Alert Bay is also remembered as a site where the famous anthropologist Franz Boas did much of his fieldwork a century ago.
